Dhofar is the southern province of Oman, known for its historical ruins and the incense trade. It is the world's leading source of frankincense.
It is considered one of the most beautiful provinces in Arabia, especially in the south-west, for its khareef (monsoon) climate, temperate vegetation and bird life. It is also considered Oman's most fertile area.
This full-day tour combines the frankincense trail of Eastern Dhofar in the morning with the natural wonders of Western Dhofar in the afternoon.
Your day
You are picked up between 08:00 and 08:30 for a morning in Eastern Dhofar, on the frankincense trail.
Stop at Ayn Razat, at the foot of the Qara Mountains, with its natural springs, plants and flowers. Continue up the mountains, home of the Jebalis and their large herds of camels and cattle.
At the Sumhuram archaeological site, see the ruins of this old frankincense port city and its storerooms. Along the coast, stop at Bin Ali Mosque and the grave of a holy man buried here in the 14th century.
In Mirbat, once a trading place for horses, stroll through the old town to see its architecture and old Dhofari houses. On the way back to Salalah, stop at the white sandy beach of Taqa.
In the afternoon, explore Western Dhofar. Cross the Qara Mountains and head south, where they turn lush and green, to Hiob's Tomb, visited by Islamic pilgrims.
Stop at frankincense trees and a bird sanctuary, then reach Mughsayl Beach, known for its blowholes, where the sea bursts up at regular intervals at high tide.
Return to Salalah town and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Then visit the Mughsayl and Salalah bird sanctuaries.
