2 Days Jebal Shams At Its Natural Splendor

   Giorno 1

   Nizwa, Misfat Al Abrien and Jebal Shams

   Your first stop on the way to Jebal Shams is Nizwa. Its souq is built in traditional style, and sells silverware, intricate hand-made khanjars (daggers), copper, weaving and other handicrafts.

   Next to the souq is Nizwa Fort, a museum today, with splendid views over this ancient town and the mountains around it.

   Walk through its many rooms, passages and towers.

   Then take a winding road up into the hills to the far-away, picturesque mountain village of Misfat Al Abrien, where time has stood still.

   Drive up the towering mountains of Jebal Shams, past the deep ravines of Wadi Ghul, through untamed, rugged country dotted with tiny settlements. At 3000 metres high, Jebal Shams is the highest mountain in Oman.

   Dinner and overnight stay at Jebal Shams. Lunch is optional.

2. 2
   Giorno 2

   Bilad Sayt, Wadi Bani Awf and Nakhl

   After breakfast, leave Jebal Shams and Nizwa. Drive to the picturesque mountain village of Bilad Sayt, where time seems to have stood still for ages.

   The village sits on top of a cliff. It is a spectacular sight from the terraced farms below, which provide for the basic needs of the people who live there.

   Continue along the loop to Wadi Bani Awf and climb through the wadi up the mountain. At one point you can see the gorge below, which really does look like a snake.

   If you wish, trek into the gorge, where there are several small pools for bathing.

   Then travel along the Batinah to the date palm grove of Nakhl, to see the natural hot spring and the 350-year-old Nakhl Fort.

   Return to Muscat. Lunch is optional.
