Jebal Akhdar, also written Jabal Akhdar or Al Jabal Al Akhdar, means 'the Green Mountain'. It is part of the Al Hajar Mountains in the Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate of Oman.
It stretches about 300 km (186 mi) from northwest to southeast, 50 to 100 km (31 to 62 mi) inland from the Gulf of Oman coast, and is one of Oman's most striking areas. The highest point, Jebel Shams (Mountain of the Sun), is around 3,000 metres (around 9,800 feet) high.
This overnight trip takes you to Nizwa, the oasis of Birkat al Mauz and the gardens and rose terraces of Jebal Akhdar.
I tuoi giorni
Pickup is between 08:00 and 08:30. Drive first to Nizwa to visit Nizwa Souq, one of the largest of its kind in Oman.
Vendors sell fish, meat, vegetables, pottery, jewellery, handicrafts and souvenirs in old market halls, from 05:00 to about 10:00 each morning.
On Fridays, villagers from nearby sell donkeys, goats, cattle, sheep and chickens at the open-air cattle market.
Next to the souq, explore Nizwa Fort, now a museum, with its many rooms, passages and towers and fine views over the ancient town and the mountains. It shows the economic and military achievements of the early Yaruba dynasty from the mid-17th century. Built to withstand the strongest attacks, it even had traps along its corridors to deter intruders.
Drive to Birkat al Mauz, an oasis at the edge of the steep cliffs of Jebal Akhdar. Walk around the old village, then through its large banana and date plantations.
Drive up the mountain road, stopping at valley viewpoints, and check in to your hotel. Overnight at the Jebel Akhdar Hotel.
Akhdar means green in Arabic, and the lush gardens on the plateau show why. See the fruit and vegetable gardens built on terraces on the side of the mountain.
In the morning, visit the Sultan's rose gardens. For centuries, rose distillers here have waited each spring for the earliest Rosa damascena blooms.
The terraces of the villages of Al Ain, Al Shiraijah and Al Aqua are covered in pink native roses, and the scent of rose water from the local distilleries fills the mountain air. The rose water is kept in clay urns for ninety days until distillation is complete.
Take a scenic walk of one and a half hours along the edge of the mountain and through villages, with views over the deep valley and the garden plantations.
Walk into one of the wadis to visit an old abandoned village, then drive back to Muscat.
