Panoramica

The Sharqiah Sands, or Wahiba Sands, are named after the Bani Wahiba tribe, who still live there in their traditional way. The sands stretch 180 km from north to south and 80 km from east to west, covering 12,500 square kilometres.

This day trip pairs the dunes with Wadi Bani Khaled, an oasis where water flows all year from a natural spring.

Passo dopo passo

  1. Leave Muscat in a 4WD vehicle and head for the Wahiba Sands.

  2. Travel into the Hajar Mountains and through Wadi Al Aqq, then on through the townships of Ibra and Al Qabil.

  3. Enjoy the multicoloured sands of Wahiba. In the north-east, enormous dunes reach up to 300 feet high, and your guide shows you his experience in driving them.

  4. Continue to the oasis of Wadi Bani Khaled in the Sharqiah region. Water flows all year from a natural spring at the top of the wadi, feeding its rich greenery.

  5. Head for the source of the water, a series of deep pools at the narrow end of the wadi, and Moqal Cave.

  6. Take an easy walk along the riverbed, with free time to enjoy the cool rock pools.

  7. Return to Muscat.
