Dhofar is the southern province of Oman, known for its historical ruins and the incense trade, and the world's leading source of frankincense. It is considered one of the most beautiful provinces in Arabia for its khareef (monsoon) climate, temperate vegetation and bird life, and Oman's most fertile area.
East of Salalah lies the historical part of the region: the ruins of Sumhuram (Khor Rohri), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the easternmost outpost of the Hadramaut kingdom, on the ancient frankincense route between the Mediterranean Sea, the Persian Gulf and India.
The Empty Quarter, or Rub Al Khali, is the world's second-largest desert, stretching from Oman into Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the UAE. On the way you reach Ubar, a legendary lost city in the southern Arabian desert, also called Wabar and Iram of the Pillars.

At the Sumhuram archaeological site, see the ruins of this old frankincense port city and its storerooms. Along the coast, stop at Bin Ali Mosque and the grave of a holy man buried here in the 14th century.
In Mirbat, once a trading place for horses, stroll through the old town with its old Dhofari houses. On the way back to Salalah, stop at the white sandy beach of Taqa.
In the afternoon, explore Western Dhofar. Cross the Qara Mountains and head south, where they turn lush and green, to Hiob's Tomb, visited by Islamic pilgrims, and stop at frankincense trees and a bird sanctuary.
At Mughsayl Beach, see the blowholes, where the sea bursts up at regular intervals at high tide. Return to Salalah for dinner at a local restaurant, visit the Mughsayl and Salalah bird sanctuaries, and go back to your hotel.
Leave Salalah and climb into the mountains behind the town, crossing the Qara Mountains to the Najd area of Dhofar.
Stop at Thumrait, known as a Bedouin settlement.
Drive towards the desert and Ubar, the lost city believed to have been swallowed by the desert without trace.
Explorers such as Wilfred Thesiger and Ranulph Fiennes came here.
Beyond Ubar, see the mega dunes of the Empty Quarter, which rise to 250 m and more, and search the sands for the small geodes scattered around.
Have lunch at Thumrait.
On the way back to Salalah, you may see a UNESCO site with frankincense trees.
