If you have a short layover in Muscat and no time for a day tour, this short tour shows you the Grand Mosque, a magnificent piece of Islamic architecture, and Sultan Al Alam Palace.
In 1992, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos ordered a grand mosque to be built to mark 30 years of his reign. A design competition followed in 1993, and work began in 1995, with Bousher chosen as the site. Carillion Alawi built it over around six years. Today it is considered Muscat's best-known attraction.
Al Alam means flag in Arabic. Sultan Al Alam Palace has a unique gold and blue façade. The Sultan does not live there, and the palace is used to receive VIP visitors.

Just 15 minutes from the airport, you reach Bousher, where the Grand Mosque stands.
Your guide shows you the mosque, listed in the Guinness World Records for its carpet and chandelier. It was built with 300,000 tonnes of Indian limestone.
The main prayer hall is breathtaking. The men's area holds 6,500 worshippers and the women's area 750; with the space outside, 20,000 can pray here.
The mosque houses the world's second-largest hand-woven carpet, with 1,700,000,000 knots and a weight of 21 tonnes. The chandelier measures about 14 metres and holds thousands of lamps.
Walk to Sultan Al Alam Palace, a short distance away, and take photos.
Your guide drives you back to the airport to catch your flight.
