Before oil was discovered, Muttrah was the centre of commerce. Its location by Muscat harbour, on the route from India and China, gave it great importance. It is still one of the largest ports in the region.

Today Muttrah is one of Muscat's tourist attractions, with landmarks such as the traditional Muttrah Souk and Sour Al Lawatiah. Visitors come to the souk for souvenirs, and Omanis for their everyday needs.

A holiday in Muscat is not complete without a visit to Muttrah.

  1. Explore Muttrah Souk, one of Muscat's popular souks, where Omanis once came for their daily needs.

  2. Wander its rows of small shops set close together. Locals call it Al Dhalam Souk, meaning darkness in Arabic, because its design keeps the sunlight out.

  3. Browse incense, perfume oils, jewellery, handmade crafts and textiles, a good place to find souvenirs for friends and family.

  4. Your guide then takes you to the Fish Market at the end of the Corniche. It has a wide range of fresh fish, such as hammour, kingfish and octopus.

  5. Choose your favourite fish and have it cleaned and gutted.
